Baton

Catch me if you can,
my hand outstretched,
reaching for you even as you run —
we do this relay in remembrance
of a partnership we once had.
When I falter,
you will overtake me,
and when I fall,
you will leap over me,
a gazelle evading the lion’s maw,
breaking from the herd
in an attempt for freedom.
You are mine,
and I will miss you,
but I will cheer you on
from where I lay
just out of the blocks,
having given up on myself
before I even began.
